Handicrafts Section

The primary objectives of the Section are to preserve and promote the values of traditional Hungarian folk art and artisanship and to co-ordinate those engaged in folk art. The Handicrafts Section of the Hungarian Heritage House therefore organizes educational programs for handicraft teachers and co-ordinates folk artisan training programs countrywide.

The folk handicrafts instructors' training course has been running for ten years and includes branches of folk art such as rug weaving, pottery, leatherwork, lace-making, basket weaving, rush work, straw work and making corn husk objects. The course gives a certificate in instructing folk handicraft activities at playhouses and teaching a chosen folk craft both in and out of school curriculums.

There are also courses for the further education of teachers of folk arts. The "Master course" and the "Teacher of teachers" course cover the areas of embroidery, weaving, leatherwork and instructing folk handicraft workshops.

Master courses, conferences and field trips are available for professionals and masters of folk handicrafts.

The Handicrafts Section runs several competitions, organizes exhibitions, edits and publishes books for students and artisans in the Carpathian Basin.

The section is also engaged in organizing handicraft workshops for children and live folk art demonstrations both in Hungary and abroad.

Texts, dances and music of brilliant rural artists are kept in our memories, in our feet and voices. These are significant parts of Hungarian traditions that is in turn a vibrant hue in European culture.

The Folklore Section offers courses, programs, exhibitions and publications on the genres of traditional Hungarian cultural heritage.

The goal of the Folklore Section is to preserve and pass on the traditional folklore of the Carpathian Basin, regarding folk music, folk dance, folk narratives and folk games. All the staff of the department are specialists of traditional dances, music or folk narratives of the Carpathian Basin. Applied Folk Arts Section

The Council of Applied Folk Arts was founded in 1953. From 2004 on, it is operating as the Applied Folk Arts Section of the Folk Arts Department at the Hungarian Heritage House.

The General Manager and the Applied Folk Art Section are supported by the Applied Folk Art Advisory Board.

The Applied Folk Arts Section supervises the Museum of Applied Hungarian Folk Art. The museum has a collection of approximately 9,000 items scattered in local applied folk arts museums throughout the country. The Budapest head museum also holds a considerable amount of exhibition material.

The majority of the collection consists of textiles, embroideries, wood- and bone carvings and products of folk pottery. There is a smaller amount of laces, dolls in folk costumes, baskets, furniture, metalwork, leatherwork, blue-dye textiles and decorated eggs.

The activities of the Museum are in line with the tasks assigned by the government. Such a task is the qualification of folk artworks, as well as calling for contests and organizing exhibitions.

The collection of the Museum of Applied Hungarian Folk Art is unique in the sense that its items - the products of contemporary applied Hungarian folk art - are being produced continuously. Acquisition of new items is subject to an up-to-date knowledge of contemporary trends and changes.

Persons having a permanent qualification and outstanding results are nominated, upon request, "Applied Folk Artists". The title is awarded by the Applied Folk Art Advisory Board.

Our tasks include

  • qualifying folk artworks;
  • awarding the honorary title "Applied Folk Artist";
  • maintaining the Museum of Applied Hungarian Folk Art, enlarging and managing the collection;
  • calling for national contests regarding applied folk arts; qualifying artworks organizing exhibitions of the artworks;
  • preserving and promoting applied folk Hungarian art both in Hungary and abroad.
